The Fair Competition and Anti-Monopoly Organization (FAC) organized a seminar titled "Why is electricity expensive? Who is causing the public suffering?" with academics, politicians, and representatives of consumer organizations proposing solutions to the high electricity bills. Lt. Cdr. Sitha Tewari, President of the Organization for the Promotion of Fair Competition and Anti-Monopoly, said at the seminar 'Who is the cause of the people suffering from expensive electricity?' that the people who really cause the most suffering are politicians because politicians are the ones who represent the government sector and the people who will protect the people's interests, protect the country's interests, and are the ones who have to negotiate with the private sector that will come to bid for the project. But the people who are negotiating do not side with the people's interests, which is like having a lawyer but the lawyer side with the opposing side. Therefore, there is no way we will win the case. Therefore, this is the cause that has occurred and has been festering in Thai politics for a long time. In the past, it has been difficult to fix because in many cases, there were contracts that were made very carefully. It may be possible to fix it by revolution because the constitution can be torn up and new rules can be set, but politicians elected from a democratic system cannot interfere in this area. If they do, they will be sued. Therefore, there is no part that can help protect the people's interests. 'The reason for organizing this event is because on August 22, there was a Vision for Thailand event where former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra spoke on stage about solving the monopoly problem. I personally believe that no one understands and can solve this problem better than former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra,' said Mr. Sitha. Therefore, as an organization promoting fair competition and anti-monopoly, we are already looking at the problem of trade monopoly. Today, the topic is electricity costs. The seminar 'Why is electricity expensive? Who is the cause of the people suffering?' This time, all sectors exchanged their opinions to propose solutions to solve the problem. Dr. Decharat Sukkamnerd, representative of the People's Party, pointed out that the draft of the PDP 2024 plan has repeated mistakes, which will result in expensive electricity bills and unclean electricity. The expensive electricity bill is due to high demand forecasts, too many reserve power plants, and faulty processes, which will result in electricity bills of almost 4 baht per unit. However, if the excess is cut, the electricity bill can be reduced by more than 50 satang per unit. Therefore, he wants the new cabinet to review the PDP 2024 plan. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chalie Charoenlapnaprat, representative of the Consumers' Council, proposed that the government should adjust the process of planning for the development of electricity production capacity to be in line with new trends and reduce reliance on the Force. Stop building new natur al gas power plants, reduce monopolies, and create channels for producing and selling electricity from renewable energy in the country. As for business consumers, they should turn to relying on themselves to the fullest. Source: Thai News Agency
