The climax of this year’s National Youth Day celebration was the presentation of the National Youth Day Awards. There were four categories namely, Excellent Youth, Youth Service, Young Youth Leaders and Excellent Project For Youth. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to bestow the awards.
Upon arriving, His Majesty was welcomed by Yang Berhormat (Retired) Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, as the Chairman of the National Youth Day Celebration Executive Committee and Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Energy (Energy and Manpower) and Industry, as the Deputy Chairman of the Celebration’s Executive Committee.
Accompanying His Majesty were His Majesty’s sons and brothers,
-His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office;
-His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik;
-His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah;
-His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah and other members of the royal family.
The event started with the reading of the surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.
In his welcoming address, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports highlighted the establishment of the Youth Entrepreneurship Strategic Governing Body to ensure youths continue to be involved in entrepreneurship.
Loyalty to Allah and the Monarch, Love for the Nation as well as defending the country’s sovereignty were the pledge read by 34 youths in the Ikrar Belait, or the Youth’s Oath. The participants were achievers from different fields and led by Pengiran Haji Ahmad Fadillah Akhbar bin Pengiran Haji Sellahhuddin, Head of Belait District Information Branch and Co-founder and Advisor of the Ukwah Building Project. Pengiran Haji Ahmad is a recipient of Queen Elizabeth the Second’s Youth Leader’s Award in June 2018. The oath readers included a special needs youth.
A video show by the Creative Youth Group showed several youths who achieved excellence in entrepreneurship as well as young entrepreneurs who pioneered new industries which are hoped to inspire other youths to work hard and never give up striving to accomplish success especially in entrepreneurship.
A choir performance by 34 youths from youth associations and special needs persons highlighted the important role of the young people in driving, shaping, helping and improving the country’s prosperity and development.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then consented to present the awards to the recipients of the National Youth Day Awards 2018. Haji Syed Mohammad Yassin bin Haji Syed Anayatullah Shah received the Excellent Youth Award. Apart from being active in youth movements and activities in the country and abroad, the founder of Battlepro Management is also active in community, religious and leadership affairs by implementing a number of programmes intended to unite youths. He was also the recipient of the ASEAN Youth Social Entrepreneurship 2017 Award in Manila.
The Youth Services Award was presented to a Sociology teacher at the Tutong 6th Form Centre – Dayang Nurul Hadina binti Haji Alias. The teacher is active in voluntary programmes which develop and motivate the community to continue living in unity and harmony without expecting any reward. Dayang Nurul Hadina is also proactive in managing several associations including Kemajuan Insan Association, KESAN, WeCare Association, Global Shapes, Girl Guides and South East Asia Young Leaders Initiative.
Awangku Abdul Azim bin Pengiran Yusof, the Founder of the social network TeachMeGuru and Chairman of Youth Transformation Community Club Education Bureau of the Bander Seri Begawan Youth Centre was awarded the Young Youth Leaders Award. The award is in recognition of his leadership in moulding 200 youths as tuition class teachers to 500 registered students. Awangku Abdul Azim also inspired and convinced other youths to work hard towards achieving skills intended goals that gave birth to the Wakaf Ilmu, Belia Sayang, SMART Learning and Brunei Sejati Programmes.
The Excellent Project Award For Youth gives recognition to youth projects that inspire youth development in the various fields. Besides that, the projects are innovations for development and progress in line with the country’s aspiration and the National Youth Policy. The award was given to the Belia Sayang Programme organised by TEACHMEGURU and the Youth Transformation Community Club, KKBT. The Belia Sayang programme is a unique project which focuses on the improvement of educational assessment for less privileged children. Its target are Year 11 students. All the award recipients received a trophy, Brunei Woven cloth, Certificate of Appreciation and three thousand dollars.
The theme, “Belia Pemacu Brunei Maju”, or Youth, the Drivers of Progressive Brunei is seen as a trust given to the young people so that they continue to be proactive in planning and equipping themselves not only with knowledge but also personal skills, develop good personality, charisma and resilience. This is vital for national development and His Majesty aspiration for accomplished youths and a progressive nation.
