The Islamic New year of 1440 Hijrah is celebrated filled with gratitude at all mosques, suraus and religious halls nationwide. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended the National Level Hijrah New Year celebration at Jame' 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah in Kampung Kiarong.
Upon arrival, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of Major Islamic Events of 1440 Hijrah; Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Awang Haji Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti, and Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar, Syarie Chief Judge, as well as other Executive Committee members.
Also in attendance were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen; and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel.
The National Level 1440 Hijrah New Year Celebration began with the 3 times reading of the doa marking the end 1439 Hijrah, led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal.
The arrival of 1440 Hijrah was welcomed with 21 shots of the cannon at the Jame' 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah compound.
The Mass Fardhu Maghrib prayer was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim also led the reading of the new year 1440 Hijrah doa.
To seek blessings from Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala so that the country can gain prosperity and well-being and be protected from disasters, the mass Sunat Hajat prayer was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim.
This was followed by the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doktor Ustaz Awang Haji Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.
The Minister of Religious Affairs in his welcoming speech among other matters stated that the hijrah new year which is celebrated every year marks the national celebration for an Islamic historical event. The country which has practised Islam for more than six hundred years is blessed and protected by Allah the Almighty. It maintains the concept of the MIB which upholds the trust given by Allah by guarding the sanctity of Islam. The Minister added with Allah's guidance the country has established a network of religious services with His Majesty paying the utmost attention towards all aspects of Islam in governance in order to strengthen and maintain peace and security.
The celebration was further enlivened with a tazkirah or talk delivered by Awang Haji Abdul Rajid bin Haji Mohd Salleh, Director of the Islamic Da'wah Centre. Among other matters, the talk stressed that knowledge and its practise play the role of mover or generator towards achieving Wawasan Negara 2035 which aims to transform Brunei Darussalam into a country with highly educated, skilled and successful population with a high standard of living as well as a dynamic and sustainable economy. Awang Haji Rajid highlighted that knowledge and practising it work in tandem in order to solve challenges in producing a visionary generation. Such a generation is one that is prepared and equipped with worldly knowledge and that of the hereafter for the development and excellence of the ummat or Muslim nation.
To bless the ceremony, the Doa' Selamat was read by the State Mufti.
His Majesty and the other congregants then performed the mass Isha' prayer led by Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin.
The theme of the celebration, "Ilmu dan Amal Nadi Wawasan Negara" emphasises that knowledge and its practise shape the country's change and development and help in efforts towards realising Wawasan Negara 2035. The country needs educated and skilled people but education should be guided by faith and spiritual ethics in order to produce people with good morals and healthy minds as leaders in this world and in saviours in the hereafter.
