156 Metric Tonnes of Ajwa Dates

Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah requires support and solid cooperation from all parties in facilitating the distribution of His Majesty’s Personal Gift of Dates. Since 1995, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah had carried out the distribution with the close cooperation of District Offices, penghulu and village head institutions, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and the Royal Brunei Police Force.

This year, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah purchased 156 metric tonnes of Ajwa dates from Saudi Arabia. Loaded in 11 containers, the dates were delivered via sea and safely arrived at Muara Port on the 19th of February.

When the coronavirus struck the country in 2020, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah structured and updated the dates distribution process by establishing dates distribution centres at each ministry and departments including higher education institutions. Civil servants at the government sector will receive said dates at their respective ministry and department, while employees in the private sector will receive the dates through their respective companies.

Sweet and long-lasting, dates are also rich in nutrients and became Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wassalam’s staple food. Scientific study found that dates are rich in iron and calcium in addition to providing energy. Based on this, Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wassalam encouraged the ummah to break the fast with dates.
