30th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting

The 30th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting aimed to further enhance the Commonwealth cooperation on cancer prevention and control including the implementation of vaccination programmes in commonwealth member countries. The meeting also stated its commitment to strengthen multi-sectoral cooperation, establishing the information sharing mechanism and best practices between Commonwealth nations as well as monitoring the development of commitment implementation and various Commonwealth cooperation initiatives in the field of health. The Commonwealth nations including Brunei Darussalam at the meeting shared various initiatives and best practices that give a positive impact towards the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases as well as the reach of universal health coverage.

Attending the meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, were Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Dr Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health and Awang Haji Abdul Manap bin Othman, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health. The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Health and Senior Officers from 53 Commonwealth countries.

The meeting also focused on the implementation of the commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 in relation to health particularly in ensuring universal health coverage. The meeting's agenda included a dialogue session with the Secretary General of the World Health Organisation, His Excellency Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus which focused on the challenges and direction of tackling non-communicable diseases as well as the coordination of issues related t health that were given priority by the Commonwealth and the World Health Organisation. The meeting ended with a unanimous adoption of the 30th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting Statement, which among other matters stressed on the united commitment in tackling non-communicable diseases specifically in strengthening the control of Tobacco and food that can jeopardise health, as well as enhancing the public awareness programme on health care.
