31st UBD Convocation

One thousand, two hundred and eleven (1,211) graduates received Doctor of Philosophy, Masters, Bachelor's Degrees and diplomas in various disciplines at the 31st University Brunei Darussalam Convocation this year. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of UBD awarded Doctor of Philosophy and Bachelor's Degree to 7 hundred and 36 graduates yesterday morning. The ceremony took place at the Chancellor Hall, UBD.

The ceremony began with the reading of surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman the Minister of Education and Datin Doctor Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor of UBD.

Also in attendance was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office as the Pro-Chancellor of UBD.

The reading of Al-Quran, Surah Al-'Alaq was presented by Dayangku Fauziah Nadhirah binti Pengiran Haji Jofri, Bachelor's Degree student and first runner up in the National Tilawatil Quran Adult Category this year. The verse highlights the excellence of knowledge, strength of Ibadat and Aqidah or faith in defending the Zikir nation concept which is based on the practices of Ahli Sunnah Waljamaah and is the main driver that spurs the people towards realising Wawasan Brunei 2035.

In her welcoming address, the Vice Chancellor of UBD among other matters touched on a number of developments achieved by the UBD since the previous convocation ceremony which includes profile research in accordance with Field-Weighted Citation Impact, a benchmark for research impact. The Vice Chancellor further added as of 2018, the UBD's overall research performance is 59 percent higher compared to average similar international publications. For the first time the university has been categorized as a very high research intensive university ranked the highest in research by QS in September last year. However, the UBD still needs to enhance its research profile to enable to compete in the international arena. In this regard UBD strives to further increase the number of high impact publications in the future. Besides that the UBD has introduced five new research group namely Herbal Medicine, Sensor Technology, Catalysis, Tourism and International and Comparative Education.

His Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then delivered the titah of consent to confer the degrees to the graduates.

From 736 graduates who received degrees in the morning, 29, including 15 international graduates received the Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics, History, Engineering, Bio-Technology, Computer Science, Geo-Science, Biomedicine, Public Health, Administration, Economy, Public Policy, Education, islamic Civilization and contemporary issues. 707 graduates received the Bachelor's degrees in Linguistics, Literature, History, Sociology and Anthropology, Creative Arts and Technology, computer Science, Biology, Geology, Mathematics, Applied Physics and Chemistry.

Among UBD's achievements is the introduction of new programs in collaboration with strategic partners which is hoped to use their respective advantages in enhancing their capacity building. Earlier this year the UDB became a strategic partner of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces R-B-A-F, in conducting Command and Staff Course which is not only participated by RBAF officers but also officers from 13 friendly nations. The participants will receive the 'Graduate Diploma' on completion of a 40-week course and have the opportunity to continue their studies in the Bachelor of Defence and Security Studies. Apart from that, more than 4,500 students from 10 countries are undergoing English language programme at UBD-FPT Global Centre in Da Nang, Vietnam which is the UBD overseas campus since its formation in 2017.

Towards developing and producing students who are skilled and creative in entrepreneurship, the UBD has applied several programmes in the GenNEXT Programme including specialisation in Entrepreneurship in the Bachelor of Business 'Summer Work Experience Programme'. The programmes expose, stimulate knowledge and improve students' skills, in particular those related to entrepreneurship thinking.

To bless the ceremony, Doa Selamat was read by the State Mufti. Since its establishment 34 years ago, the UBD continues to play the role of the main institution of learning to produce excellent individuals for the development and progress of the nation through the GenNEXT Programme.
