32nd UBD Convocation Ceremony

1,182 graduates received Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, Masters and Bachelor degrees as well as Diplomas in various disciplines or fields during the 32nd Universiti Brunei Darussalam Convocation Ceremony. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of UBD conferred the Doctor of Philosophy and Bachelor degrees to 561 graduate's yesterday morning. The ceremony was held at the UBD Chancellor Hall.

The ceremony commenced with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Salim bin Haji Besar.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education and Datin Doctor Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, the Vice Chancellor of UBD.

Also gracing the event was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Senior Minister at the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Pro-chancellor of UBD.

The reading of Al-Quran's Surah 'Ali-Imran by Awang Muhammad Izzuddin bin Haji Nor Hisham, UBD Bachelor Degree student described the perfection and beauty of the creation of the sky, earth, night and day as well as the whole universe as evidence of the greatness and power of Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala. However, only Ulul Albab or the learned ones who always remember Allah and reflect on His Greatness know the truth of creation.

In the welcoming address the Vice Chancellor of UBD highlighted the university's academic quality.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then delivered the titah of consent to confer the degrees and diplomas to the graduates.

Out of the 561 graduates who received degrees in the morning, 40, including international graduates received the Doctor of Philosophy or PhD in Brunei Studies; Anthropology; Applied Linguistics; Geography; Malay Language and Linguistics; Malay Literature; Islamic Governance; Materials Science; Islamic Civilisation and Contemporary Issues; Chemical Engineering; Systems Engineering; Biomedical Sciences; Economy; Education; Applied Physics; Biodiversity; Biology; Biotechnology; Computer Science; Energy Studies and Mathematics.

521 obtained Bachelor degrees in Business, Engineering, Health Science, Science and Literature. This year's convocation also witnessed the conferment of degrees to graduates of the first cohort from the Doctor of Philosophy Degree Programme in Islamic Governance and Bachelor degrees in Pharmacy and Health Science Dentistry.

Recognition by the United States based Accreditation Body of Engineering and Technology, ABET for the UBD Bachelor in General Engineering Degree Programme that ensure recognised programmes has fulfilled standards for producing graduates in more critical technical fields which oriented towards innovation and new technologies including public well-being and safety.

After placing 60th for the first time in Times Higher Education Asia Rankings 2020, UBD continues to record success in the Quacquarelli Symonds, World University Rankings, rising 44 places to 254th position in the world.

Established in 1985, UBD's first student intake was only slightly more than one hundred. The number has increased annually since then. UBD which is now one of Asia's most distinguished institutions of higher learning is guided by five core values which are People, Expertise Aptitude, Relevance and Leadership.

To invoke Allah's blessings for the ceremony, 'Doa Selamat was read by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Salim.

UBD is now among the top one percent of the estimated twenty six thousand universities of the world.

His Majesty also viewed a special exhibition featuring a research project by graduating student Dayang Nurbazilah binti Haji Metussin on a Hand Gesture Recognition device. The project aimed to develop a Natural User Interface, NUI, using hand gesture recognition to control different devices and systems. The model was developed to control appliances of a smart home using a video camera and machine learning models. NUI is not only convenient but can help those with disabilities to carry out daily activities.

His Majesty's presence at the convocation ceremony reflected His Majesty's strong support. It was also an inspiration for UBD to improve and strengthen its role as an institution of higher learning capable of competing at the international level and contributing to national development.
