34th Universiti Brunei Darussalam Convocation

1,028 graduates received their Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, Masters and Bachelor’s degrees and diplomas in various disciplines at the 34th UBD Convocation, this year. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of UBD conferred the PhD and Bachelor’s degrees to 721 graduates yesterday Morning. The ceremony took place at UBD’s Chancellor Hall.

The ceremony began with the recitation of surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri  Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Doctor Dayang Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Minister of Education, and Doctor Hazri bin Haji Kifle, Vice Chancellor of UBD.

Also present was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, as Pro-Chancellor of UBD.

The reading of Surah Al-Anbiya was presented by Awang Ahmad Termizie bin Ahmad Baihakie, 4th year Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences student.

In his welcoming address, the Vice Chancellor of UBD, among others touched on the latest developments of UBD, including the implementation of joint research projects with the Ministry of Health related to the COVID-19 pandemic. He added that UBD has also collaborated with scientists from Virginia Tech in the US for an innovative research project crossing Artificial Intelligence, biodiversity, and bio-inspired engineering. The research also involves scientists from renowned universities such as the National University of Singapore and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology as well as participation of 23 students from various American universities under the International Research Experiences for Students Program.

His Majesty then delivered the titah of consent to confer the degrees to the graduates.

Out of the 721 graduates who receive their certificates in the morning session, 18 graduates including international graduates received the Doctor of Philosophy in Malay Language and  Linguistics; Chemical Engineering; Systems Engineering; Finance; Management; Education; Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Physics; Biotechnology; Computer Science; Geosciences; Asian Studies and Biomedical Sciences.

703 graduates received their Bachelor’s degrees in Business; Engineering; Health Sciences; Science, Literature at Academy of Brunei Studies and Literature. 

In terms of research, UBD showed an increase from 311th position in 2020 to 233 in 2022 in the impact of the Research Citations for the Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

UBD actively provides industry-relevant training programmes, which are developed together with the digital technology industry for the marketability of graduates in the digital era.

The Doa selamat was read by the State Mufti.

The UBD’s vision 2025 focuses on several key strategic goals, among them, towards a University that excels in teaching and research.
