3rd History Speech Competition

Early efforts should be made to ensure the research, study and analysis of the country's history are undertaken by Bruneians so that its authenticity and originality are always safeguarded. Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja (Retired) Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Md Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports stressed this during the Final of the 3rd History Speech Competition for the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Trophy. The contest took place at the Dewan Raya of Radio Television Brunei (RTB) yesterday morning.

The Minister also described history as a reflection of a country's identity and culture. Without history, the country's people would not know their origins. Without knowing and understanding the history of the country and the race, people would continue to be victims of 'oriental-centric' or a race that depends on the reference of outsiders on the history of their own country and race. Yang Berhormat Pehin added the country wants a visionary young generation who are history literate and place the history of the country and the people on a high position as the nation moves forward to achieve Wawasan Brunei 2035.

The competition which carries the theme, "Creating History of the Country's Development" was organised by the Brunei History Centre with the cooperation of the Department of Schools and RTB. The event acted as a medium to promote Brunei's history among students, describing historical events and explaining its importance and significance to the development and strengthening of the race who adhere to the concept of the Islamic Malay Monarchy or MIB.

The winner in the government and private schools category was Dayang Norafifah Binti Haji Latif from the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School. Dayang Saizatul Natasha Binti Saipol Rizal from the Hassanal Bolkiah Boys Arabic Secondary School was the champion in the Government and private Pre-university Category.
