50 Percent of Doctors in the Country Are Locals

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, the Minister of Health explained the matter in response to a question voiced by Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Mohamed bin Pengiran Haji Osman @ Othman.

The total number of doctors is 698, of which 349 or fifty percent, are locals. There are more than two thousand nurses in the country of whom 98 percent are locals. It is the Ministry of Health's policy putting local first. However, when time and needs warrant it and locals are not available, expatriates have to be recruited. Sometimes expatriates are also recruited because of their different experiences which can provide added value in doctor and nursing practice to the local staff.
