The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports recommended the Language and Literature Bureau particularly the Bureau's Literature, Magazine and Journal section to form Child's Writing Club with the aim of raising capable authors in the regional and international level. One of the activity which can be organised is Authors Academy with the objective of scouting young talents from the magazine writing contest. This certainly can overcome the shortage of credible author particularly in other specialised fields including Islamic Literature. Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Md Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports made the recommendation during the 50th Anniversary of Mekar Publication and Prize presentation for Mekar Magazine and Juara Pelajar DPB Writing Competition 2017. Yesterday morning's function was held at Balai Sarmayuda, Language and Literature Bureau in Berakas.
Yang Berhormat Pehin further stated that technology's development and advancement has a side impact or challenge. For example, today's children who are more fond of electronic gadgets than reading material. Therefore, the bureau has to be sensitive with the new development. Such a competition according to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports is hope to instill and enhance an interest in reading among children and youth.
Published since 1967, Mekar was the first children magazine by the Language and Literature Bureau in effort to elevate the Malay language as the medium language. The publication of Mekar has instill the children's interest to read and be involve in a creative and non-creative writing.
At the function, Yang Berhormat Pehin also launched 'Buku Mekarku Sayang' consisting of eight books. The publication of the books is a continuous effort in elevating the Malay language as the official language through its publication materials, raising reading culture as an important platform in mental development and community development as well as the country.
Yang Berhormat Pehin then received a replica of DST Easi Prepaid Card showing the 50th Anniversary of Mekar Publication from Awang Haji Amer Iskandar bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Zakaria, Assistant General Manager of DST Business Division. DST has printed a total of 300 thousand DST prepaid cards in conjunction with the celebration.
The function coincided with the presentation of appreciation gift to the logo maker of 50th Anniversary of Mekar Publication and Mekar magazine editorial staff. Winners of the Mekar Magazine and Juara Pelajar DPB Writing Competition 2017 also received their prizes. The bureau has received more than 200 participation from 25 primary schools and 12 secondary schools throughout the country for the competition.
