Brunei Darussalam plays a pivotal role in combating human trafficking through a whole-of-nation approach. According to Yang Amat Arif Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong, the efforts include the role of the court as part of the criminal justice system in upholding the rights of human trafficking victims as well as determining sentencing considerations for perpetrators. The Chief Justice of the Court stressed the matter in his opening address of the panel discussion session on the issue of human trafficking during the 6th Joint Judicial Conference, JJC, between Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Singapore yesterday. The virtual conference was held at the International Convention Centre, Berakas.
In his opening address during the 6th JJC, Yang Amat Arif emphasised the pivotal role of the courts in adjudicating alleged violations of economic, social and cultural rights and said “it is those who are the most vulnerable in society who are in most need of legal protection. He went on to add that the JCC the JJC allows to share experiences and identify together the possible solutions that can enable Judiciaries to meet the needs of justice systems.
