70th World Health Assembly

Brunei Darussalam firmly supports the framework of sustainable development and its aspirations which drive forward a comprehensive and holistic approach to improving population health and well-being. This approach, according to the Minister of Health, takes into account the interplay of, and engagement between the health system, other relevant sectors, and the wider community.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doktor Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi spoke during the 70th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. The text of Yang Berhormat's speech was read by His Excellency Dato Paduka Haji Awang Mahdi bin Pehin Orang Kaya DiGadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Abdul Rahman, the Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to Switzerland.

The assembly was attended by Health Ministers and representative from 194 member countries of the World Health Organisation, WHO. This year's theme is "Building Better Systems for Health in the Age of Sustainable Development". Among the issues discussed at the Assembly were preparedness, surveillance and response to health emergencies, anti-microbial resistance, donation and management of blood, global shortage and access to medicines and vaccines, communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, and promoting health through the life course including adolescents' health. Prior to the World Health Assembly, His Excellency led Brunei Darussalam's delegation to the 29th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting on the 21st of May in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting was also attended by Health Ministers, Senior Officers and representatives from various international agencies from the 53 member states of the Commonwealth.
