289 graduates received the Doctor of Philosophy or PhD, Master and Bachelor Degrees as well as Diplomas in various disciplines at the 9th UNISSA Convocation this year. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam as Chancellor of UNISSA also graced and officiated the presentation of degrees and diplomas to the graduates.
The ceremony began with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doktor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.
Upon arrival, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education as Chairman of UNISSA's Council; Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Haji Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman as Deputy Chairman of the UNISSA's and Doctor Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, the Rector of UNISSA.
Also present was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Pro-Chancellor of UNISSA.
The Hafl al-Takharruj or convocation was further enlivened by Al-Quran verses read by Awang Abdul Muin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, Syariah Criminal Justice System Higher National Diploma Graduate. The Hadith was read by Awang Ahmad Khairulanam @ Muhammad Hidayatil Wafi bin Haji Abdullah, Bachelor of Syariah (Fiqh and Judiciary) Graduate. The highlights of Al-Quran verses and Al-Hadith were presented by Sheikh Ahmad Wa'ez bin Haji Sheikh Aubid, Syariah Criminal Justice System Higher National Diploma Graduate.
In the welcoming address, the Rector of UNISSA underscored the university's developments and progress since last year's convocation ceremony. These included expanding its academic programmes by offering six new programmes at the Post-graduate and Pre-graduate levels which cover Islamic Development and Economic Management to spur economic development and towards sustainable and high quality management of the nation's economy in line with worldly and Hereafter demands. UNISSA also introduced the "Khubara Scheme" which is an expert's scheme that aims to attract locals with great potential to become UNISSA academic staff, simultaneously becoming experts in fields needed by the country.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then officiated the conferment of doctorates, degrees and diplomas to the graduates.
From 289 graduates, 3 received the Doctor of Philosophy or PhD degree, 20 received Master Degree, 6 received Diploma in Islamic and Syari'e Law, 2 graduates received Post Graduate Diploma, 174 received Bachelor Degree, and 84 received Higher National Diploma in Syariah Criminal Law.
UNISSA is committed to improve its quality and elevate its performance at the international level. The university has introduced its new strategic plan for the next 5 years starting from 2019 to 2023 as reference and guidance in its efforts to ensure the plan conforms to its new vision of becoming the Hub of Higher Islamic studies in the region as aspired by His Majesty.
In the effort to generate outstanding students with the global mind-set starting this year, 3 excellent students from the Tahfiz and Qiraat programme, Faculty of Usuluddin will spend a year studying at the University of Science and Muslim World Education in Jordan through the UNISSA Overseas Study Programme. The appointment of two UNISSA academics as Associate Professors in Arabic and Islamic Finance has improved the university's reputation and produced local experts in specific fields required by the country.
The recent award of ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management certificates in the aspect of "Offering University Level Islamic Studies and Research" was a significant recognition for UNISSA to catalyse more excellent management. Doa Selamat was read by the State Mufti.
Established in 2007, UNISSA has produced 1,439 graduates in various disciplines. The convocation ceremony was enlivened further by the presence of 24 foreign institutions of higher learning including those from Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Timor Leste, Malaysia and Indonesia.
His Majesty's presence at the event reflected His Majesty's wise leadership in producing highly educated and skilled citizens with strong aqidah or faith who will drive the development of the ummah and country based on the guidance of Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah.
