Awangku Muhammad Adibul Amin bin Pengiran Haji Marjuki and Dayang Hajah Siti Noor Dzuhairah binti Haji Awang Damit, Brunei Darussalam's national qari and qariah or male and female quran readers become the pride of the nation for winning the second place in both the men and women categories of the 59th International Al-Quran Reading Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Both of them returned home yesterday.
Present to welcome the qari and qariah were Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs; Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister or Religious Affairs; and Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs. Shortly after arrival at the airport lobby, the winners were greeted with a hadrah and Dikir Marhaban presentations.
According to the Minister of Religious Affairs, Al-Quran-reading should be learnt as one of the academic education subjects that can develop in the country and not entirely for competitions or contests. To achieve this, the Ministry is working to get assistance from other countries particularly Egypt. The fact that although Awangku Mohd Adibul Amin, Brunei's qari who won second place in the international competition is not from the religious educational discipline, yet he could still win, shows how religious education has a strong influence on families in Brunei.
