ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting

The Second Minister of Defence and the Singapore Minister for Defence reaffirmed the excellent and long-standing bilateral defence ties between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.

The statement was made during a courtesy call by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof to His Excellency Doctor Ng Eng Hen. The visit by Yang Berhormat Pehin was at the invitation of the Singapore Minister of Defence. During the meeting, both ministers expressed deep satisfaction on the state of bilateral relations especially in the field of defence.

Before the meeting, Yang Berhormat Pehin reviewed and inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by personnel of the Singapore Armed Forces. During the call, both sides exchanged views on a range of current security issues – highlighting the growing importance of working closely together to address these challenges. They discussed matters on Singapore’s chairmanship of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM), where Yang Berhormat Pehin expressed Brunei Darussalam’s wholehearted support for the upcoming ADMM and ADMM-Plus meetings in October.

The Second Minister of Defence also had the opportunity to meet key political figures and senior officials of Singapore on the sidelines of the visit. They included the Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, His Excellency Teo Chee Hean; Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamad Maliki bin Osman; and the Deputy Secretary (of Special Projects), Mr. David Koh Tee Hian. On the last day of his visit, Yang Berhormat Pehin toured the Air Force’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Command, and a cyber-security facility.
