The Brunei Book Fair and Empowering the Reading Culture Carnival 2018 organised by the Language and Literature Bureau is currently being held at the Indoor Stadium, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas. It was officiated this morning by Yang Berhormat Awang Abdul Mutalib Bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Minister of Communications as the Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. At the opening, Dayang Hajah Sariani binti Haji Ishak, Acting Director of Language and Literature Bureau, in her speech, said that the Book Fair and Carnival has so far shown a positive impact to visitors. A number of visitors have expressed their eagerness for the event to take place in order to find reading materials that are relevant and significant with the current environment.
The Acting Director of Language and Literature Bureau explained that the Brunei Book Fair and Empowering The Reading Culture Carnival is hoped to be able to create added value and become a prominent platform in strengthening the involvement of publishers and book stores from the aspect of cooperation and connectivity in establishing a healthy and progressive eco-system to ensure positive mind growth as a high culture that should be developed by the Brunei society. She stressed that the traditional reading culture should be preserved and be consistent among the people. This year the Book Fair and Carnival carries the theme 'buku Jendela Ilmu' or Books are the Windows of Knowledge.
At the function, the Minister of Communications presented and launched 38 new books namely 5 academic books, 3 general books, 12 adult fiction books and 18 children's literature books. Among the recipients of the new books was Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister of religious Affairs. Also launched was a book or folklore titled 'Pulau Labi-Labi', translated into the dusun dialect, English, Tagalog, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Mandarin, French and German which is a result of the translation and publication cooperation commitment between the Language and Literature Bureau and the Language Centre, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The Book Fair and Carnival is held in conjunction with the 34th National Day celebration. This year, 78 booths have been provided including participation from the government publishers such as Language and Literature Bureau, private publishers and bookstores locally and overseas. The 10-day fair is open to the public until 8th of March from 8.30 in the morning until 10 at night, while on Fridays, it is open from 9 to 11:30 in the morning and from 2:30 in the afternoon until 10 at night.
