Brunei Darussalam Given the Opportunity to Name an Exoplanet

The International Astronomical Union, IAU, has given the opportunity to Brunei Darussalam to name an exoplanet and a star on the 2nd of August 2019. In an interview with RTB, Awang Hazarry bin Haji Ali Ahmad, the General Secretary of Brunei Darussalam Astronomy Association, P.A.D.B said currently, 4000 exoplanets have been found and mostly have no proper names. The IAU has allocated a planet and a star to be named for every country in the world. Brunei Darussalam been given the opportunity to name a HD 179949 star in Sagittarius and a giant gas planet.

The General Secretary of PABD said that PABD will organise the programme as the IAU National Outreach Coordinator with the cooperation of IAU through the the Office for Astronomy Outreach.

The Name Exoworlds is a global initiative in conjunction with the 100 years anniversary of IAU. IAU is a body comprising of astonomy members, possessed professionalism with PhD and above, and active in the field of astronomical education and professionalism.
