Six events were up for competition in the Brunei Darussalam Regatta 2019 in the morning. His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office officiated the presentation of prizes to the winners.
Upon arriving at the Bandar Seri Begawan Royal Wharf, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, and Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports as Co-Advisors of the Brunei Darussalam Regatta Executive Committee. Also in attendance was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah.
His Royal Highness proceeded to the waters of Brunei River, some 2-thousand metres from the Bandar Seri Begawan Royal Wharf to officiate the flag-off of the Inter-Ministry 25 paddlers Traditional Boat Race.
13 teams took part in the Inter-Ministry 25 Paddlers Traditional Boat Race which starts from the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Bridge. The teams represented the Prime Minister's Office; Ministry of Home Affairs; Ministry of Religious Affairs; Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism; Ministry of Defence; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Finance and Economy; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Development; Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications; and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The event was won by the Prime Minister's Office, while second and third place went to the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports respectively.
The morning's regatta also saw 5 other events competed namely the Inter-District 20 Paddlers Fibre Glass Boat Race; the 25 Paddlers Open Traditional Boat Race; the Under-30 Youth 15 Paddlers Fibre Glass Boat Race; the Inter-Private Company 20 Paddlers Fibre Glass Boat Race; and the 30 Paddlers Open Traditional Boat Race.
The one-thousand metre Inter-Private Company 20 Paddlers Fibre Glass Boat Race was participated by 8 teams. The teams comprise of Baiduri Bank, Takaful Brunei Darussalam, Law Society of Brunei Darussalam, TAIB Regatta, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, Royal Brunei Airlines, RB; Telbru and Setia Protective Security Services, SPSS. The race began in front of the Arts and Handicraft Training Centre Building.
The race was won by SPSS. Second place went to Telbru and RB took third.
Another team event held was the 2,000 metre 30 Paddlers Open Traditional Boat Race which was participated by various ministries, mukims, villages and districts as well as uniformed teams, locally and overseas.
The event was won by Lela Cheteria A team. The Laksamana Sinampuan team from Lawas Sarawak placed second while Podsi Kalimantan Barat from Indonesia came in third.
His Royal Highness presented prizes to the winners of the morning events. The Temburong District team who won the Inter-District 20 Paddlers Fibre Glass Boat Race received a cash prize of 8-hundred dollars and a trophy. The winner of the 25 Paddlers Open Traditional Boat Race was won by Juang Team A who received a 9 hundred dollar cash prize and a trophy while Laksamana Sinampuan team from Lawas, Sarawak, who won the Under-30 Youth 15 Paddlers Fibre Glass Boat Race and eceived cash prize of 7 hundred dollars and a trophy.
The Prime Minister's Office team who won the Inter-Ministry 25 Paddlers Traditional Boat Race received a 9-hundred dollar cash prize and a trophy. SPSS who won the Inter-Private Company 20 Paddlers Fibre Glass Boat Race took home 9 hundred dollars and a trophy. Meanwhile, the winner of the 30 Paddlers Open Traditional Boat Race, Lela Cheteria A, received one thousand dollars and a trophy.
The Brunei Darussalam Regatta 2019 was organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. The participation of over one thousand six hundred local and overseas participants this year, clearly showed an encouraging response. The traditional boat race can not only preserve the Bruneian heritage and culture for future generations but also bring up the country's name in the eyes of the world. The event is also hoped preserve the tradition of unity while upholding solidarity within the society and country.
