Renal disease is on the rise Worldwide. This is mainly related to the epidemic of lifestyle illnesses such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension. In Brunei Darussalam alone, the number of patients on renal replacement therapy has doubled in the last 15 years. The Minister of Health said this last night at the 5th Brunei International Nephrology Conference Gala Night.
Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Jaafar, also touched on shifting more focus to primary prevention and early intervention by primary healthcare physicians which will identify diabetes and hypertension patients at high risk of developing chronic kidney disease at an early stage. This will prevent the onset of chronic kidney disease by controlling their risk factors such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity.
The Gala Night was also highlighted with the Launching of the 7th Brunei Dialysis and Transplant Registry. Data collected provides important understanding of kidney diseases prevalence and Incidence and also helps to ensure that renal patient care in Brunei is Safe and of a high-standard.
More than 200 participants attended the Conference comprising doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in various specialties from Brunei Darussalam and overseas. The 3-day conference is facilitated by distinguished professionals in the field of nephrology from Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, India and Brunei Darussalam. The conference aimed to update knowledge of healthcare professionals treating patients with kidney diseases and to align local standards with those recommended by international bodies.
