The Brunei Darussalam Maritime and Ports Authority, PBMP, reminds speed boat operators, passenger and other boats to always provide life jackets and safety equipment. According to PBMP, passengers must wear life-jackets when using a water transport and make it a culture. The reminder was issued yesterday morning during an operation and campaign on the importance of wearing life jackets at the capital as the country is celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri in a few days.
According to PBMP, the number of passengers are expected to increase during the festive season. While, the demand for speed boat to and from Bandar Seri Begawan and Bangar Town in Temburong District will also increase during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Awang Haji Yusoff bin Haji Metusin, Head of Enforcement and Investigation Unit, Brunei Darussalam Maritime and Ports Authority warned boat drivers not to overload passengers. Awang Haji Yusoff added PBMP will conducted an operation for unregistered boat and those with expired registration.
Boat operators must slow down their boat when passing by river passage area or narrow lane, namely housing area in Kampong Ayer and construction sites particularly during the unsettling weather conditions. When operating at night, navigation and spot lights must be on. Boats must be registered, equipped with safety equipment and life jackets. Operators must apply for permission from agencies such as Immigration and Customs.
From January to March this year, the Enforcement Section of PBMP has carried out 6 campaigns to disseminate the importance of wearing life jackets; 39 operations and boat inspection. However, according to PBMP, the public awareness on the importance of wearing life jackets are relatively low especially during normal days. Boat owners and operators can obtained the life jackets during the dissemination campaign from several companies selling the items.
