Commonwealth Point of Lightaward

A local volunteer receives recognition for his exceptional voluntary service. The recognition as the 58th Commonwealth Point of Light was awarded by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second to Awang Mohd Rizan bin Doctor Haji Abdul Latif, the President of Beach Bunch Brunei for supporting marine conservation in Brunei Darussalam beaches.

Presenting the award on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen was His Excellency Richard Lindsay, the British High Commissioner to the country. Each Commonwealth Point of Light receives a personalised certificate signed by Her Majesty the Queen as Head of the Commonwealth. The objective of the award is to give recognition to volunteers who serve the community with merit and inspire others in addressing social problems and other issues.

Interviewed by RTB News, Awang Muhammad Rizan said the award is a great honour and a spark that ignites the spirit to continue the vision in promoting beach cleanliness in the country. He spoke of another cleaning campaign and more plans this year which include up to 400 students as well as continuing a life-saving programme. Awang Muhammad Rizan added the programme is not simply putting up signage or providing life-saving equipment but also giving training as life-savers. Equally important is raising public awareness on beach cleanliness, especially plastic pollution which is a global problem.
