It is less than a week from the new school year and parents and guardians are on a spending spree to buy books, stationery and other necessities for their children. A number of them prefer to choose shops which offer all school necessities under one roof or a one-stop centre. In this regard, The Department of Economic Planning and Development, JPKE reminds parents and guardians to get value for money by comparing the price and quality of items before purchase, and avoid from over-spending by managing their budget.
Consumers are reminded of their rights and responsibilities to seek clarification from retailers or sales representatives on prices or products if there are any doubts. Consumers are also advised to keep proof of purchase such as receipts in case of any required follow-up after the purchase, and also to study the terms and conditions of purchase, particularly for electronic items.
In this regard, JPKE reminds books and school supplies retailers to practice responsible and ethical retailing by providing good value and moderating cost of school supplies, to drive sustainable domestic consumption and business growth. According to JPKE, ethical business practice will boost domestic customers' loyalty and retailers' reputation.
In conjunction with the Brunei Salebration (BSb) 2018 which is ongoing until the 13th of February 2019, participating businesses are encouraged to offer their best deals and creative discounts to promote shopping in Brunei.
Businesses are also reminded to display price tags clearly on items to ensure price transparency and enable parents to make choices and price comparisons. This is required under the Price Display Regulations, failing which can face a penalty of not more than 1 thousand dollars after one warning notice. While subsequent offences can be prosecuted and face a maximum fine of 20 thousand dollars and imprisonment of up to 5 years.
To support the 'Smart Consumer' initiative, JPKE encourages the general public to make use of the PenggunaBijak /SmartConsumer mobile application, which can be downloaded for free on iOS and android devices. The application also provides a platform for consumers to lodge a complaint on any unethical business conduct which will be channelled directly to JPKE.
