Data Science Explorers Competition 2018

The Data Science Explorers Competition 2018 is intended to inspire and catalyse ASEAN youth to harness the power of data and gain meaningful insight from this data through the use of various technologies, proving ideas or recommendations to relevant ASEAN bodies. The Vice Chancellor of University Technology Brunei, UTB said this at the national final of the competition, this morning. Professor Doctor Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman said data comes from various sources, extending beyond the traditional corporate database to include emails, mobile devices outputs, and sensor generated data and is growing at a significant rate.

Seven teams from three higher education institutions competed in the competition. Co-organized by ASEAN Foundation and System Application Product, SAP, the ASEAN Data Science and Explorers 2018 aims to inspire and catalyse youth activism. It targets tertiary students across all 10 ASEAN member states to harness the power of data, gain insights by leveraging the SAP Analytics Cloud and encourages participants to deliver data-driven insights which highlight issues in ASEAN across six United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. First introduced in 2017, the ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ADSE) is a data analytics competition that aims to enhance awareness and appreciation of the ASEAN community amongst young people through digital literacy intervention.

The competition was won by BruGens35 team of UTB. Second and third places were won by the Innovate team from UTB and Politeknik Brunei team respectively. The winner will represent Brunei Darussalam in the regional finals that will be held in Singapore on the 25th October 2018. Prizes were presented by Awang Garry bin Ibrahim, Acting Director of the ASEAN Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Dr. Saiful Omar, the Deputy Dean of Schools, of UTB School of Computing and Informatics and Mr. Eugene Ho, Head of Corporate Affairs of Southeast Asia, SAP.

The competition targets tertiary students across all 10 ASEAN countries to harness the power of data, gain insights by leveraging the SAP Analytics Cloud and deliver ideas to relevant ASEAN bodies.
