Brunei Darussalam’s priorities as ASEAN Chair this year under the theme ‘We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper’, which focuses on harnessing the caring nature of the people in the region, preparing ASEAN for the future, and ensuring sustainable prosperity and resilient regions. The matter was shared by the Minister of Development during the recent Group of 20, G20 Environment Ministers Meeting which was held virtually. Brunei Darussalam, as the Chair of ASEAN 2021, was invited as the Guest Chair of the G20 by the Republic of Italy which holds the position of G20 President for 2021.
During the meeting, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Engineer Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar highlighted some of ASEAN’s initiatives in protecting and managing its natural capital and biodiversity found in the Southeast Asian region, as well as regional cooperation in tackling marine debris and plastic. The Meeting, which was held in a hybrid format, was chaired by His Excellency Roberto Cingolani, the Minister for the Ecological Transition of the Republic of Italy. During the meeting, TWO main topics were discussed that focused on the use of nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based methods, stopping biodiversity loss and restoring soil degradation. In addition, efforts to address marine debris and plastic waste as well as the transition towards a cyclical economy are also discussed. The meeting also adopted the G20 Environment Communiqué.
