Guard of Honour Marking the Department’s 58th Anniversary

The Fire and Rescue Department has tackled 353 house and building fires in 2017, with an estimated value of 7.35 million dollars in damages. The value of salvaged properties were estimated to be around 3.3 million dollars. The department also handled some 4,473 emergency cases last year – ranging from road accidents, search and rescue, to natural disasters and other incidences. Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doktor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs, read out the statistics at the Guard of Honour marking the Fire and Rescue Department’s 58th anniversary.

According to Yang Berhormat, until March this year, the department handled 22 cases of building and house fires – with property damages valued at around 700-thousand dollars. The Minister of Home Affairs stressed that efforts in bringing down the number of such incidences require support from the various components. The Fire and Rescue Department has also taken the initiative to revise the existing procedures to ensure that it will not hinder such efforts.

The Guard of Honour was mounted by 94 firemen and firewomen. The celebration was held simultaneously with the World Fire-fighters Day which is observed every 4th of May in recognising the sacrifices and services of the fire-fighters around the globe.

The function ran concurrently with the handing over award to 14 exemplary firemen and firewomen. Meanwhile, 15 people received award of appreciation. The Best Fire Station Award went to the Women Operation Unit Fire Station, SPARK Fire Station and the Bukit Beruang Fire Station.
