His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, in a sabda, called on all athletes to be highly committed and disciplined in carrying out their respective responsibilities apart from giving concerted focus, high endurance and always show the best performances during the SEA Games. These are the trust that needs to be upheld and carried out accordingly with one aim, which is collecting medals. His Royal Highness made the sabda at the handing over of the national flag to Brunei Darussalam's Contingent to the 29th Southeast Asian or SEA Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from the 19th to 30th of this month. The ceremony took place at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
His Royal Highness was greeted upon arrival by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohamad Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. Also in attendance was His Royal Highness's son, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul 'Aleem.
In his speech, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohamad Yussof said the aspiration of all the people in the country is to see the success of the country at the regional arena. Yang Berhormat Pehin added that the success is also a selection of young athletes to this tournament as it reflects on their spirit to penetrate the world of sports which is now overwhelmingly saturated with young stars that have successfully shown their greatness. The country's participation in the Games shows the country's support towards the solidarity of the community through highly prestigious sports. The athletes are heroes in the hearts of sports enthusiasts and elites to be covered with medals and to hear the national anthem being played. The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports reminded the athletes that they should compete with a strong spirit, prepared with the correct psychology and to apply the teachings of the coaches and assimilate the courtesy of sports.
His Royal Highness, in the sabda, congratulated the athletes who were selected to represent the country. According to His Royal Highness, the athletes' participation is based on their criteria and detailed assessment made and agreed upon by the National Athletes Assessment and Selection Executive Committee. His Royal Highness, in the sabda went on to say that apart from abiding by the rules of the Games, all athletes were also advised to always keep away from any prohibited items as well as obeying the Act and Rules of Anti-Doping enforced by the World Anti-Doping Agency, WADA. His Royal Highness also urged all officers and coaches to carry out their duties with honesty and trustworthiness, discipline as well as acting as role models to all athletes. His Royal Highness hoped that the officers and coaches will always ensure that the athlete's preparation for the opponent is at a maximum level that is strong physically and mentally.
At the ceremony, His Royal Highness handed over the Brunei Darussalam flag to Pengiran Anak Mohamad Sofian bin Pengiran Anak Haji Ibrahim, the Brunei Darussalam Chef De Mission to the 29th SEA Games. The country's 171 member contingent comprises 105 athletes and 66 officers.
Doa selamat was read by Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin.
Brunei Darussalam will participate in 14 events namely aquatics, athletics, badminton, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, golf, karate, lawn bowl, netball, pencak silat, sepak takraw and wushu. The country's contingent will leave for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in separate groups starting from this Saturday.
