His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di- Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday afternoon arrived in Dhaka, People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Accompanying His Majesty is His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen. Present at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka to welcome and greet His Majesty was His Excellency Mohammad Abdul Hamid, President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh His Excellency Mr. Tipu Munshi, MP, Commerce Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh as Minister-in-Attendance; and Her Excellency Nahida Rahman Shumona, High Commissioner of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam. Also present were Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd. Yusof, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and His Excellency Haji Haris Haji Othman, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. A 21-gun salute welcomed the arrival of His Majesty.
His Majesty, together with His Excellency proceeded to the Special Dais for the Official Welcoming Ceremony, which began with the national anthems of both countries. His Majesty was then invited by the Guard Commander to inspect the Guard of Honour mounted by personnel of the Armed Forces of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. During the ceremony, His Majesty was introduced to Cabinet Ministers from the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, followed by members of the Brunei Darussalam delegation being introduced to President Mohammad Abdul Hamid. The State Visit is held at the invitations of His Excellency Mohammad Abdul Hamid, President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, as well as Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. This is His Majesty’s first State Visit to the country. Diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh were established on 5th May 1984. Both countries cooperate extensively in various main areas including defence, education, health, trade and energy.
