Increase in Gastroenteritis Cases

As a result of the continuous monitoring of infectious diseases conducted in the country by the Ministry of Health, it was found that there has been an increase in cases of vomiting and diarrhea or Gastroenteritis over the past three weeks.

It is an infection caused by either viruses, bacteria or protozoa in the stomach and intestines, causing diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever. It can be spread through food, drinks, hands and surfaces that have been contaminated by an infectious organism that causes gastroenteritis. This infection interferes with the absorption of water from the intestines and can cause dehydration.

As in most cases, patients can recover on their own in time, but some cases require more time to recover. Therefore, patients are advised to drink plenty of water or drinking rehydration drinks that is available in any nearby health centres and pharmacies.

The public is also advised to immediately seek treatment if they have symptoms such as Vomiting or diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, drowsiness or confusion, and unable to retain water in the body such as vomiting after eating or drinking. They are also reminded to practice good hygiene by taking preventive measures to avoid contagion and infectious agents causing gastroenteritis among them, only visiting premises selling food or restaurants that have a clean environment; drink boiled water or bottled water that has an intact seal; always wash your hands using hand sanitizer or soap with clean water after using the toilet, before eating and before preparing food.
