International Day of Older Persons Celebration

The Senior Citizens Issue Action Plan prioritises the involvement of senior citizens in community development and improvement of health services for the group. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports has taken steps in ensuring the strategic planning and direction of the Senior Citizens Issue Action Plan is in line with the Madrid International Plan of Actions on Aging 2002. This was explained by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports at the International Day of Older Persons celebration yesterday morning. Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin added that such efforts involve the ministry’s strategic partners including agencies, private companies and non-government organisations, to ensure that any matter carried out is the product of a whole of nation and inclusive approach.

Yang Berhormat said that this year’s International Day of Older Persons celebration will be more meaningful with the initiative especially in the ministry’s continuous efforts to improve any matter related to enhancing the welfare and well-being of the country’s senior citizens. This is vital in view of the fact that senior citizens are valuable assets to the country, who are rich with beneficial experience and knowledge, especially for the younger generation. This step is important as the latest statistics also show that the life expectancy in the country is expected to increase which also means that the number of senior citizens in the country will also clearly show an increase.

The function was highlighted with a pencak silat and traditional musical instruments performances called ‘kasapi’, with a ‘gulingtangan’ accompaniment from The Tutong District Senior Citizens Activity Centre. Present were members of the Legislative Council and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. With this year’s theme of Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions, it is aimed to raise society’s awareness on the importance of family ties, care, protection and facilities related towards improving the life quality of senior citizens so that they are always respected and appreciated for their many contributions to nation development.
