JPKE Surprise Inspections

4 businesses in the Brunei Muara District were found to have committed a number of offences under the Price Control Act Chapter 142. The offences were found during surprise inspections by the Department of Competition and Consumer Affairs, Department of Economic Planning and Development, JPKE, to a number of business premises in the Tanjung Bunut and Sengkurong areas.

2 businesses were issued compounds of 500 dollars each for selling price controlled goods above the maximum price set including cooking oil, formulated powdered milk and rice. Meanwhile, 2 businesses were issued warning notices for not displaying price tags. The surprise inspections led by Pengiran Hajah Siti Nirmala binti Pengiran Haji Mohammad, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Economy and Finance at the Prime Minister’s Office, aimed to ensure controlled goods under the Price Control Act, Chapter 142, including cooking oil and formulated powdered milk, are not sold above the set maximum prices. Apart from that, the visits also inspected business compliance on price tagging to ensure price transparency to consumers and sales activities are conducted in an ethical manner.

Under the Price Control Act, Chapter 142, non-compliant businesses can face a compound of not more than 1-thousand dollars after a warning notice is issued. Subsequent offences can be prosecuted and face a maximum fine of 20-thousand dollars and imprisonment of up to 5 years. It is the suppliers’ responsibility to inform retailers of the current maximum price approved by JPKE. The updated price list of the price controlled goods which were also handed over during the inspections, can be accessed through the JPKE website or the PenggunaBijak / SmartConsumer Mobile Application or contact the Competition and Consumer Affairs Department directly. JPKE advises the public to practise the “Smart Consumer” concept, which is to compare prices of different stores and to look for alternative brands or substitutes, in order to get the best value for money.
