"Bahasa Melayu Bahasa Kita, mencerminkan rasa kepemilikan bersama dan rasa kekitaan terhadap bahasa rasmi negara" is the theme of the Language Month which is celebrated on every 1st of July.
The Language Month celebration is also held in response to the titah made by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the Language and Literature Bureau's 50th anniversary Golden Jubilee celebration on the 17th of September 2011.
Language should be made as the nation's pride and as a display of the nation's self-identity. As Malay-speaking Brunei citizens, we also need to uphold and preserve our mother tongue and ensure that Bahasa Melayu will always be prioritised and used.
This was among the matters touched by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi Bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture Youth and Sports in a message in conjunction with the Language Month 2017. In the message, Yang Berhormat Pehin stressed that in order to ensure the continued use of Bahasa Melayu, the Language and Literature Bureau, which is entrusted to uphold Bahasa Melayu, has continued to line up and carry out various language-based programmes and activities.
Yang Berhormat Pehin also stressed that efforts to empower Bahasa Melayu require a comprehensive approach by creating unity and solidarity from all parties, including all government departments and the private sector. This is because protecting the country's identity does not lie solely on the shoulders of the Language and Literature Bureau. This is the responsibility of us all as Bahasa Melayu is our language, and therefore our responsibility to uphold and empower it.
