Launch of Workplace and Health Programme

The cost of medical management and treatment in Brunei Darussalam is free for all of the country's citizens. However, with the increasing number of non-communicable diseases, such costs are on the rise year by year. According to the Minister of Health, to ensure such costs do not continue to rise in the future and make sure that the quality of life for every citizen is of high quality, preventive measures should be given serious and concerted attention as well as coordinated and comprehensive actions taken. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health stated the matter at the launching of Workplace and Health Programme for the 2019 - 2020 session. Yang Berhormat said the measures to handle and prevent non-communicable diseases require various strategies and methods at several stages. It also involves cooperation from all stakeholders through the Whole of Nation approach to together stimulate changes of mind-set and actions to instil the healthy lifestyle practices continuously.

Doctor Haji Zulaidi bin Haji Abdul Latif, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Professional at the Ministry of Health in his welcoming remarks explained that the programme will be introduced in two stages. He explained that the programme will encompass several components such as physical health examination and monitoring; health education sessions, workshops on the risks of non-communicable diseases; and free after work group exercise sessions every week.

At the ceremony, Body Mass Index equipment and blood pressure gauge were presented to permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries from ministries. An exhibition was also held at the event. The Workplace and Health Programme is a Private Public Partnership collaborative programme between the Health Promotion Centre, Ministry of Health and Gleneagles JPMC to encourage the provision of workplace that provides an environment and actions that support employees to be more active, practice healthy eating, tobacco free and have good mental well-being.
