Hotels and restaurants are encouraged to serve Bruneian cuisines in a more sophisticated way, and to further improve on the taste and presentation of Bruneian dishes to be served as part of a fine dining experience at receptions held within or outside the country. Speaking at the launching of Brunei Gastronomy Week, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism said it is important for hotels and restaurants to provide a unique Bruneian gastronomical experience for those in the country and tourists. Yang Berhormat also touched on the declaration of Gastronomy Tourism that was approved during the ASEAN Tourism Minister's Meeting in Thailand recently.
At this function, Rizqun International Hotel was presented with the best taste award, while the Empire Hotel and Country Club received the best presentation award. The best innovation award went to URBN Kitchen, the Brunei Hotel took the best creativity award, and the best wholesomeness award went to Royal Brunei Airlines. Also present was Doctor Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism and his deputy, Awang Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali. The annual activity is held in conjunction with the 34th National Day celebration.
