Despite various challenges, Brunei Darussalam is still able to maintain its status as the only Malay country that can uphold its Malay identity and the monarchical system with Islam as the official religion. According to the Senior Special duties Officer at the Malay Islamic Monarchy Executive Council's Secretariat, this is where the Government and the relevant parties play an important role in together perpetuating and shaping a mould based on the Bruneian identity through all aspects of life.
Doctor Haji Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong shared this view in an interview with RTB during a Lecture on the Malay Islamic Monarchy concept yesterday.
Dr Haji Muhammad Hadi said Brunei Darussalam has upheld the monarchical system throughout the reigns of 29 Sultans in the country. On how far the nation will survive with such a status and continue to maintain the monarchical system, he referred to the titah by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on the 1st of January 1984 underlining that Brunei Darussalam will remain as a Malay Islamic Monarchy nation. This has also been drawn up in the Wawasan Brunei 2035 in the nation's effort in facing the current era of globalisation.
In the lecture entitled, "History of Malay Monarchy in Brunei," Doctor Haji Muhammad Hadi also touched on the evidence of the existence of Islamic monarchical rule in this country since the 14th century. The existence of such governance, he said was based on the discovery of historical artefacts in the country. The lecture organised by UNISSA was specifically for the university's undergraduates.
