Minor Offences Act

Indiscriminate throwing or disposal of garbage is against the law and liable to compound fines. Although such cases have been reported by the media, many individuals and companies seem undeterred and continue to ignore environmental cleanliness with their inconsiderate action. The latest compounds issued under the Minor Offences Act involved local and two foreign nationals who committed the offence of throwing garbage rampantly in a public place.

Mohamad Sharin Bin Mohammad, a Bruneian, Mohammad Saddam Hossain, a Bangladeshi, and Elis Supriatin, an Indonesian were each fined $100.00 and given seven days to settle the compounds. Their cases would be taken to court if they failed to pay the fines. For subsequent offences the penalty is a three thousand dollar fine and imprisonment of not more than 3 months. The public are again reminded to be responsible in maintaining the cleanliness of the environment. Complaints or reports can be made by calling 2244151 extensions 127 or 253 or directly to the Municipal Department Enforcement Division in Bandar Seri Begawan.
