MKM Members Attends Southeast Asia Regional Conference on Access to Justice in Thailand (BruDirect (Brunei))

Two members of the Brunei Council on Social Welfare (Majlis Kesejahteraan Masyarakat or MKM) Kamal Shaari and Azril Anwar recently participated in the Southeast Asia Regional Conference on Access to Justice at Miracle Grand Convention Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand.

According to a statement from MKM, the event was organised by the Ministry of Justice of Thailand and attended by representatives from Southeast Asian countries, Thai government officials, United Nations (UN) agencies, civil societies, academics and experts in the related field on access to justice.

The aim of the conference was to learn and share best practices as well as experiences within the Southeast Asian countries in relation to legal aid, victim remedy and witness protection.

The statement said, “Specifically, legal aid discussions covered legal aid services provided by the state such as free lawyer, legal advice, legal complaint and other measures related to legal assistance provided to people in Southeast Asian countries.

“Extensive discussions also included the scope of the role of key responsible governmental agencies on legal aid, overview of the national legislation, mechanisms, systems, measures, services provided by the state as well as example of best practices, achievements and challenges. Likewise, discussions on victim remedy included physical, psychological and financial assistance provided to the victim of the crime as well as protection provided by the state to witness of criminal cases.”

MKM member Kamal Shaari presented a paper on Legal Aid services in Brunei Darussalam.

The statement said, “Being an active volunteer member to the MKM Legal Advice and Advisory Clinic, he shared how MKM’s Legal Clinic has helped the vulnerable clients who sought assistance in their legal dilemmas on top of general advice on welfare needs.

“MKM’s effort to include legal aid within the social work framework was applauded by the panel and the participants.

“On the other hand, Zuraidah Sidek from the Attorney General’s Chambers presented a paper on Victim Remedy and Witness Protection in Brunei Darussalam.”
