National Level Nuzul Al-Qur’an Celebration

The culmination of the National Level Nuzul Al-Qur’an Celebration was the presentation of prizes to winners and participants of the Final of the National Musabaqah Al-Quran Memorisation and its Understanding for 1443 Hijrah 2022. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam presented the prizes to the winners. The ceremony took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs as Chairman of the Major Islamic Events for 1443 Hijrah Executive Committee as well as other members of the Executive Committee.

Also in attendance were His Majesty’s sons and brothers:

– His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office;

– His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik;

– His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen;

– His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah;

– And His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah.

The reading of Surah Al-Fatihah was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

The Minister of Religious Affairs in his welcoming address said that several continuous efforts have been made by His Majesty’s Government in ensuring that generations of Muslims in the country continues to be close to Al-Qur’an. He added that in enhancing the studies of Al-Qur’an memorisation to the degree level, the country has sent students to Ma’had Qira’at Syubra in Egypt. As of the past five years, from 2017 to 2021, one government scholarship student through the Ministry of Religious Affairs has passed the Takhassus Al-Qur’an wal Qi’raat studies from the institution. Meanwhile, in Brunei Darussalam, the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA has awarded the Al-Qur’an Memorisation Special Degree during its Convocation Ceremony to 64 memorisers of the 30 Chapters of Al-Qur’an which were acknowledged by the National Tasmi’e Board.

The winners of the five categories of the Final of the National Musabaqah Al-Quran Memorisation and its Understanding recited their memorisations and its understanding. Category A, memorisation of one Juzuk or chapter, which was Chapter 30 and its understanding for participants aged 13 and below was won by Dayang Amal ‘Aziyah binti Muhamad Saiful Ashren.

Meanwhile, Awang Abdul Matin bin Zulnorein emerged champion of Category B, which was memorisation of selected Surah namely Surah Al-Jumu’ah, Surah Luqman, Surah As-Sajdah, Surah Ar-Rahmaan, Surah Al-Waaqi’ah, Surah Al-Mulk, Surah Al-Insaan, Surah Yaasin, and Surah Jin as well as the understanding of Surah Al-Kahfi and Surah An-Nur for ages 14 and above.

Category C, memorisation of Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Ali-‘Imraan as well as the understanding of Surah Al-An’am and Surah Al-A’raf which was open to all ages was won by Awang Ahmad Darwish bin Hamdan.

For Category D, memorisation of 15 Chapters of Al-Qur’an as well as the understanding of Surah Al-Furqaan, Surah Ash-Syura and Surah An-Naml which was open to all ages was won by Dayang Dalili Bazilah binti Haji Jailani.

Whereas Dayang Dalili Faiqah binti Nasaruddin emerged champion of Category E, memorisation of 30 Chapters of the Al-Quran as well as the understanding of Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Surah At-Tur, Surah An-Najm, Surah Al-Qamar, Surah Ar-Rahman, Surah Al-Waqi’ah and Surah Al-Hadid which was open to all age levels.

His Majesty then presented prizes to the winners. Dayang Amal’ Aziyah binti Muhamad Saiful Ashren, champion of Category A took home a one thousand five hundred dollar-cash prize, a Crystal Plaque, participation certificate and accompanying prize. Runner-up was Dayang Nur Sofiyyah Solehah binti Mohammad Fikri and third place went to Dayang Nur Hazierah Khalisah binti Haji Umardani.

The champion of Category B, Awang Abdul Matin bin Zulnorein received a two thousand dollar-cash prize, a Crystal Plaque, participation certificate and accompanying prize. Meanwhile Awang Ahmad Muhammad @ Munir bin Ibrahim took second place and Awang Mohammad Firdaus bin Mohammad Salleh came in third.

The Category C winner, Awang Ahmad Darwish bin Hamdan took home a two thousand eight hundred dollar-cash prize, a Crystal Plaque, participation certificate and accompanying prize. Second place went to Awang Muhamad Faiz Najwan bin Muhamad Saleh while Dayang Nur Izzy Aziah binti Ahmad was placed third.

Winner of Category D, Dayang Dalili Bazilah binti Haji Jailani received a three thousand five hundred dollar-cash prize, a Crystal Plaque, participation certificate and accompanying prize. In second place was Awang Ahmad Hamizan @ Ahmad Aliridha bin Haji Laidin and third place went to Dk Nurfaiezah binti Pengiran Haji Kamaluddin.

Category E’s champion, Dayang Dalili Faiqah binti Nasaruddin received a five thousand dollar cash prize, a Crystal Plaque, participation certificate and accompanying prize. Runner up was Awang Mohamed Sahmie bin Mohamed Shalahudden and Ak Muhammad Abdul Qadir bin Pengiran Haji Ibrahim came in third. Doa Selamat was read by the State Mufti.

With the theme, “Bertemankan Al-Quran Sepanjang Zaman”, or Accompanied by Al-Qur’an throughout the Ages, this year’s celebration emphasised on life accompanied and resourced by Al-Qur’an will bring about change and excellence through its guidance.
