The National Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines For Childcare Centres in Brunei Darussalam is an action to reduce the rate of obesity among children. The action takes into consideration that preventive measures and the practise of a healthy lifestyle should be instilled earlier from school, towards producing a health literate generation who appreciates good health.
The overweight and obesity rate among the population in Brunei Darussalam are among the highest in the region. The National Health Status and Nutrition Survey 2009 to 2011 findings showed that one out of 2 children aged 5 and above is overweight or obese. The publication of the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines For Childcare Centres is inline in curbing the problem of obesity and can complete the services provided by childcare centres.
The guidelines book is divided into 3 main sections. The first section is on healthy nutrition guidelines that focuses on nutrition plan samples for 6 months to 2 years old, as well as procedures in safe food preparation. The second section which emphasises on physical activity guidelines highlights the role of childcare centres in organising various physical activities to ensure the children are being active for 60 minutes daily. The final section which is on Child physical development guidelines emphasises the standards in Child development ability including movement coordination, speech and social skills.
