Nearly 700 People Diagnosed With Cancer Last Year

Breast Cancer is one of the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Brunei Darussalam, followed by colon cancer. In an interview with Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doktor Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health, yesterday morning, Yang Berhormat stressed that the public need to come forward and meet with relevant parties to together obtain early diagnosis on cancer.

Yang Berhormat said that in Brunei Darussalam, as in other developing countries, cancer is the number one cause of death and the number is increasing every year. Efforts are being made to raise the public's awareness on the symptoms of cancer since with early diagnosis, treatment can be made effectively and the chances of survival will in turn be higher. This year the Ministry of Health will launch a cancer screening programme according to age, to ensure that people will come forward to be screened, especially those with high risks.

Yang Berhormat stressed that non-government organisations also play a role in helping to raise the public's awareness on the importance of knowing and detecting the early symptoms of cancer and its treatment. In ensuring early prevention and treatment can be carried out, support for cancer patients and the family members should also be provided. Yang Berhormat added that prevention is better than cure, therefore the people should practise a healthy lifestyle, such as carrying out physical exercises. We should make the time for it as it is for the future benefit of all.
