Offences Under Tobacco Order 2005

173 offences under the Tobacco Order 2005 were recorded in the first three months for this year. From the total, 172 individuals have been issued with compounds for smoking at restricted areas under Section 10 (1) and Section 14 (2) of the Tobacco Order 2005.

The Ministry of Health in a statement said the total number of compounds issued are increasing by 11 point 8 per cent compared to the same period in 2018. From the number of offences, 166 were men and 7 women. These include a minor under 18 years old who has been found smoking. He has been ordered to register and attend the Smoking Cessation Clinic at any designated Health Centre for the Smoking Cessation Programme.

Any individual who is found smoking at restricted areas will be issued a $300 compound for the first offence and $500 compound for second and subsequent offences. Among the smoking restricted areas are government buildings, sidewalks of business premises, shopping complexes, markets, bus stations, bus stop areas, restaurants and within 6 metres from the building line.
