Brunei Darussalam has the potential to become the largest producer of garoupa in ASEAN by 2020. This is proven by a company's production which is active in rearing garoupa in cages, Syarikat Nur Nabai Aquaculture Sendirian Berhad, which is expected to produce 1,200 metric tonnes of hybrid garoupa a year by 2020 with an estimated monthly export of 100 metric tonnes.
This afternoon, Syarikat Nur Nabai Aquaculture Sendirian Berhad began its first garoupa export which is 3 metric tonnes of live hybrid garoupa to the Hong Kong market. Present was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism. Also present were Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Mohamed bin Pengiran Haji Osman@ Othman, Member of the Legislative Council and Ketua of Kampung Masjid Lama, Pekan Muara, Sabun and Pelumpong and Doctor Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. The delivery will take about 3 to 4 days.
The company is also among the companies active in aquaculture and is serious in multiplying its production by targeting the export market. The company is a joint venture between a local investor, Fisherod Enterprise and a company from Indonesia, PT Sumatera Budidaya Marine. According to Awang Haji Rudi bin Haji Abdul Rahim, Chief Operations Officer of Syarikat Nur Nabai Aquaculture Sendirian Berhad, the hybrid fish is from two types of garoupa combined to become another type.
