The Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department has advised vendors and members of the public to always maintain the cleanliness of stall spaces especially the surrounding areas of Ramadhan stalls, and the environment in general throughout the month of Ramadhan. According to the Chairman of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board, this aims to provide comfort, well-being and cheerfulness to the Ramadhan stalls from time to time. Awang Haji Ali bin Matyassin issued the advice during the Opening of Gerai Ramadan 2018 at the car park area in Jalan Bendahara, Bandar Seri Begawan and the launch to support the 'No Plastic Bag Day' Initiative yesterday afternoon.
Awang Haji Ali also said that the issue of cleanliness and garbage is not only a problem faced in the Bandar Seri Begawan but also in other areas in the country. The issue needs to be addressed in a joint approach not only by the government, but also from the relevant stakeholders such as private companies, NGOs, volunteer groups especially from among the youth and implemented integratedly in a holistic manner and through the "one nation approach".
The opening of the Ramadhan Stall was officiated by Awang Shamsul Bahrin bin Haji Mohd Hussain, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs. As in previous years, the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department has appointed a company to conduct the Ramadhan Stalls by providing stall spaces throughout Ramadhan. 53 spaces have been provided according to categories.
The ceremony continued with the distribution of recycling bags to visitors to support the initiative to reduce the use of plastic bags and encourage the habit of recycling. The No Plastic Bag Day is applicable on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Ramadhan Stalls starting from this year, where vendors are not allowed to provide plastic bags to visitors or customers. They are advised to bring along their own recycling bags when buying delicacies at the Ramadhan Stall on No Plastic Bag Days. Recycling bags are also available at a booth at the stalls.
