The collection of zakat fitrah or tithes in the country last year has increased from $9,03.00 in 2015 to more that $9,037.00. The collection of zakat harta or property tithes also increased from more than 16 million dollars in 2015 to more than 17 million dollars last year. The Minister of Religious Affairs disclosed the increase in tithe collections during the Presentation of Credentials to Tithe Collectors Nationwide for the year 1438-1439 Hijrah corresponding to 2017-2018, yesterday. Touching on the responsibilities of the appointed tithes collectors, Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, who is also the President of Brunei Islamic Religious Council, called upon the tithes collectors to carry out their duties according to the regulations and Syarak laws.
Yang Berhormat Pehin said as notified tithe collectors have been given ample period to hand over tithe monies collected to the Islamic Religious Council, failure to abide by the regulations, action will be taken on them. The first action will be written warning or reminder letter with a copy of it will be send to the Audit Department. According to Yang Berhormat Pehin, the tithe collectors know about this matter and they need to aware on the importance of abiding the regulation. The Islamic Religious Council must ensure and enforce the administration regulation that has been made between them and the tithe collectors. It is because the Islamic Religious Council is responsible in ensuring the accomplishment of the tithes collected. The Islamic Religious Council is responsible in distributing the collected tithes to the recipients.
323 tithes collectors have been appointed for 141 areas, tithe collection locations across the country. In the Brunei Muara District, 190 tithe collectors have been appointed fro 80 areas. In the Belait District, 25 tithe collectors have been appointed for 15 areas, 49 tithes collectors have been appointed in Tutong District and 23 tithes collectors have been appointed for 13 areas in Temburong District. 36 tithe collectors have also been appointed for 4 areas for the Islamic Religious Council Department comprising officers and staff of the department. Also present was Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, who is also the Vice-President of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council.
