The government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has provided the Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme to motivate athletes and ensure that they always contribute their commitment to the country by winning medals at regional and international level championships. Yesterday, some 77 athletes, 7 coaches and 12 assistant coaches and 6 national sports associations received rewards under the Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme. The ceremony was held at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The presentation of the rewards scheme was officiated by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, who is also the Acting Minister of Health. The recipients comprise athletes in athletics, wushu, sepak takraw, pencak silat, lawn bowl and tenpin bowling during the 8th Asian Junior Wushu Championship in China, 7th ASEAN Sports School Games in Brunei Darussalam in 2015, 11th Asian Lawn Bowls Championship and 9th under-25 championship in 2016 as well as the 8th ASEAN Para Games. At the ceremony, Awang Sahri bin Haji Jumaat received the highest rewards for Para athlete in athletics, while Awang Sonkeng Gaston Hippolyte received the highest rewards for athletics Para Coach. Meanwhile, the Brunei Darussalam National Lawn Bowl Association received the highest winning rewards. Also present was Awang Haji Amer Hamzah bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Zakaria, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
