President of the Republic Of Singapore’s Visit to Botanical Research Centre

In the afternoon, Her Excellency Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore and spouse, continued their itinerary to Universiti Brunei Darussalam UBD Botanical Research Centre.

On arrival Her Excellency was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education as Minister-in-Attendance. Also present was Datin Doctor Dayang Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor of UBD. Shortly after arriving, Her Excellency planted an Agathis Borneensis tree which is also known as Borneo Kauri. The tree categorised as an endangered species based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUNC. The population of Agathis Borneensis in Southeast Asia has been depleted due to overexploitation for its high timber value and high quantity production of resin.

Her Excellency also visited the Botanical Research Centre Nature Trail and the green house. The centre has different types of timber species, iconic plants of Brunei, orchids and medical plants.

Her Excellency also heard briefing on the medical aspect of the Pawas plant and sustainable energy research carried by UBD.
