An act of arson is believed to be the cause of a fire which broke out at a two-storey house in the Kampung Mentiri National Housing Scheme. The Royal Brunei Police Force said the incident, which occurred on the 5th of April 2018, was carried out by the house owner's adopted son. In a media conference yesterday morning, Superintendent of Police Pengiran Haji Abdul Salam bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Ghani, Commanding Officer of Brunei Muara Police District said that evidence and witnesses' information, led to the arrest of a 35-year-old local man, Haji Muhd Faizal bin Haji Wasli, soon after the incident was reported.
According to Superintendent of Police Pengiran Haji Abdul Salam, investigations reveal that the suspect started the fire using a lighter, while he was under the influence of drugs. The house is owned by the suspect's foster mother, and is where the suspect himself also lives. No casualties and injuries were reported. The case was mentioned in Court yesterday where a charge under Section 436 of the Criminal Penal Code, Chapter 22 was read to him. The court ordered the suspect to be remanded for 7 days to allow the police to investigate further. The case falls under Section 436 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22, which is mischief by fire with intent to destroy buildings, which carries a life imprisonment sentence upon conviction.
