A Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) female captain has been honoured as a 2018 inductee by the International Forest of Friendship, IFOF. Captain Sharifah Czarena Suriany Syed Hashim was given the honour for being the first female captain on any flag carrier in Southeast Asia at the induction ceremony held in Atchison, Kansas, United States of America, last Saturday.
IFOF is an arbotoreum and memorial forest beside Lake Warnock in Atchison. It is a memorial to those involved in aviation and space exploration. RB in its statement said that the IFOF planted a Butterfly Magnolia tree, a close relative to Brunei's national flower, the Bunga Simpur, to commemorate Captain Czarena's induction. Captain Czarena's name joins more than one thousand three hundred honourees who have made significant contributions to the development of aviation and those who have established aviation records. Captain Czarena received a certificate honouring her selection by the IFOF last March. According to captain Czarena, she is excited and humbled to be given the opportunity to be inducted especially when Brunei Darussalam will have its own tree in the memorial forest. The IFOF in its statement will also recognize Royal Brunei Airlines for having the first female captain in any flag carrier in Southeast Asia and for the all-female aircrew that Captain Czarena led to Jeddah on Brunei Darussalam's national day in 2017. This year's event will be the 42nd anniversary conducted by the IFOF, with the theme 'Security and Solace through Flight'.
