Two attempts to smuggle contraband on the waters of Menunggol Laut and Pelambayan areas, in the Brunei Muara District were foiled recently by the Marine Police, Operations Department, Royal Brunei Police Force.
According to Inspector Abdul Hafizazuddin bin Haji Abdul Wahab, Marine Police Operations Officer, Royal Brunei Police Force, the first attempt was made on the 29th of July. A joint operation with the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam, MPABD Law enforcement at the Menunggol Laut area was able to detain a suspicious looking boat. Following the inspection carried out, 227 cartons of cigarettes of various brands were found. The driver, 72 year old Haji Hussin bin Haji Timbang, who is self-employed was detained along with the passenger, an 18 year old male who is still schooling. The second attempt was made yesterday, during a patrol carried out on the waters of Kg Serdang. The patrol found a suspicious looking boat which was anchored. Upon going near to the boat, the boat driver rtan away to shallow waters in Kg Pelambayan, leaving his boat behind. Inspection carried out on the boat found 664 cartons of cigarettes of various brands. All contraband was brought to the Marine Police and the case investigation transferred to the Royal Customs and Excise Department.
