The Retail Sales Index in Brunei Darussalam for the second quarter of 2021 showed a year-on-year increase of 9.9% with estimated retail sales value of $464.5 million. Food & Beverages Services Index grew by 28.8% with estimated sales revenue of $91.6 million.

For retail sales, almost all retail activities have shown an increase in sales driven mainly by the sales of Textiles, Wearing Apparel and Footwear; followed by Watches and Jewellery; Hardware, Paints and Glass; Petrol Station; and Department Store.

Meanwhile for the Food & Beverages Services, the rising sales was attributed by the increasing sales revenue of Other Food Service Activities, followed by Restaurants and Fast-food Outlets. The higher retail sales and sales of food & beverages were in line with the increase in domestic demand for certain goods and services due to travel restrictions abroad.

Compared to the first quarter this year, the Retail Sales Index grew by 2.5% mainly due to an increase in sales of Furniture and Household Equipment; followed by Textiles, Wearing Apparel and Footwear; Electrical Household Appliances and Lighting Equipment; Department Store; and Supermarket.

Whereas for the Food & Beverages Services Index, it recorded a decrease of 3.3% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter this year. This was mainly due to the decrease in sale revenue for Beverage Serving Activities; Restaurants and Fast-food Outlets. The full report can be obtained at www.deps.gov.bn.
